Mountain Valleyfest to benefit the Green Valley Park and Mountain Pathways School

There's something for everyone at the Mountain ValleyFest this weekend! There will be tons of food (including Earth Fare boxed lunches and food from Makoto's), children's activities (airwalks, Myrtle the Turtle, and more), door prizes, raffles, and live music all day. It was a great family event last year and should be even better this year.

The event is from 9 am to 5 pm this Saturday at the Green Valley Park, which is on Big Hill Rd, about 4 miles past Green Valley School. Admission is free, but it costs $2 to park. There will be lots of children's activities--some free, some will cost a little bit of money (probably in the form of tickets that you purchase there). You can bring folding chairs if you want to sit and listen to music, but if you're like me, there won't be a chance to sit (chasing 2 active boys around). There are also raffles, canoe and kayak trips, and plenty of good food.

"My mother is on the GV Park board, so I get a little behind the scenes look at the planning for this event. It is amazing what goes into it and how many people are involved. It is truly an incredible event and it does so much to help the park. I'm so happy to live right around the corner from such a wonderful place to take my children. It looks like the weather should be OK most of the day Saturday, so hopefully everyone will be able to come out and have a great time."

Kid Zone Family Nights at Alliance Bible Fellowship

You won’t want to miss a new program launching at Alliance Bible Fellowship this summer called KidZone Family Nights. This will be a casual event that will take place in the Alliance Bible Fellowship worship center at 7 pm on July 7-10. All families with primary-age kids are invited to attend. So be sure to write KZFN on your calendar for July 7-10.”

We know it can be really hard for families to get quality time together. We also know that parents have the biggest opportunity for positive influence in the lives of their kids. So, our Children’s Ministries team is planning a unique 4-night event that your entire family will want to experience together.

Each night will include energetic worship, creative storytelling, drama, lots of humor, and lots of surprises - all based on what the Bible has to say about the virtue of self-control.

Kids' Triathlon May 24th!

The 2nd annual High Country Kids' Triathlon will be held on Saturday, May 24th at 10am at Watauga County Parks and Rec--in the pool and the Greenway Trail. There are 3 age divisions:

• 8&under--swim 100m, bike 1 mile, run 0.5mile;
  
• 9-12--swim 200m, bike 3 miles, run 1 mile;
  
• 13-18--swim 300m, bike 4 miles, run 1.5miles.

Turchin Center's Community Art School Announces Summer 2008 Program

Appalachian State University's Turchin Center for the Visual Arts announces its schedule for children's, teen and adult programs at The Community Art School. Offered in the Community Art School studio classroom housed on the top floor of the Turchin Center's Arnold P. Sponsor Spotlight: Studio K Youth Ballet

My daughters have been privileged to learn ballet and tap at Studio K for 4 years. Cultivate a Little Singer with Musikgarten Classes at The Children's Playhouse

A new session of fun, affordable Musikgarten classes for babies, toddlers, and preschoolers are about to begin at The Children’s Playhouse, 400 Tracy Cir., Boone. All Musikgarten classes are taught by certified instructor Alison Moser and employ developmentally appropriate songs, games, movement and instruments. Alison says, “Music immerses the child in language, evokes movement, stimulates the brain and fosters physical coordination—all in a group setting that builds community.” Classes are as follows:

Today is Earth Day!

No matter what our political, social, or spiritual beliefs, we are all thankful for the world in which we live, and we should take care of it. This Earth Day, I have a couple of goals that I will try to implement this spring and summer.

• I'm going to try to reduce trash, by recycling more paper, and using more cleaning cloths instead of paper towels.
• I'm going to try to compost this summer for use in our garden. I can't really afford a snazzy compost bin, but I think you can use a large rubbermaid container and drill holes in it. Is that right?

Picnics and Dollar Days at Grandfather Mountain

I'm thrilled to announce guest writer, Barb Kelley. Barb is a homeschooling mom of four incredible boys, and she writes at My Sister's Kitchen, a food blog she maintains with... her sister!


This is our third April in the High Country and we've finally visited Grandfather Mountain. Of course, we had to wait for April Dollar Days for Locals. Grandfather Mountain isn't a cheap date for the whole family the other 11 months of the year, but April is a sweet month for saving money there.

We took out-of-town guests who were visiting. It turns out that if each vehicle has at least one local person (with a local drivers license) the entire carload gets the special $1/person admission price.

We happened to go on a drizzly Saturday afternoon and the place was practically empty. I'm not sure if it was the overcast, wet weather or the lack of tourists, but the animals in the zoo section of the park were all out of their dens and showing off.

In spite of the wet weather, we still picnicked and had a great time. I was packing food for eleven people, so that took a little planning. Over the years, my picnicking style has gotten simpler and simpler. At this point, we pretty much pack the same exact lunch every time we go.

First, I assemble a couple of gigantic sub sandwiches. I usually make my own bread for these jumbo-sized subs but if I'm in a huge hurry, I just buy some french bread from the grocery store. (If you go to http://mysisterskitchen.wordpress.com and click on the Breads category, you'll find all kinds of different bread recipes that make GREAT giant subs.)

I start by slicing the french bread loaves length-wise. I slather some mustard and mayonnaise on the bread and then start stacking sliced lunch meats and cheese. I top that with lettuce and tomatoes and then the top of the loaf. I usually slice the sub and then wrap it up, but sometimes I just take a cutting board and knife along on the picnic.

Our picnic is rounded out by apples, our favorite brownies (recipe below), and Cheetos. (Yes, I know that Cheetos are TERRIBLE for us--high sodium, loaded with fat, nasty unnatural coloring, and the Cheeto dust gets all over everything. We, however, LOVE Cheetos on picnics.)

These days, I have everybody fill their own water bottle before leaving home so I don't have to worry about drinks.

Something about hiking around in the rain made everyone famished--the perfect set-up for a successful picnic.

I'm thinking that April needs to be the month we encourage friends and relatives from out of town to come visit us, because spending the day on Grandfather Mountain is a great introduction to the High Country.

And now, the promised brownie recipe:

Barb's Best Brownies

* 4 eggs
* 2 c. sugar
* 3/4 c. oil
* 3/4 c. unsweetened cocoa powder
* 2 t. vanilla
* 1/2 t. salt
* 1 1/2 t. baking powder (NOT soda-soda turns this recipe into something icky)
* 1 1/3 c. flour

Whisk eggs and sugar together. Add oil and cocoa and mix thoroughly. Stir in vanilla, salt, baking powder and flour. Bake in a greased 9x13 pan at 350 for 20-25 minutes or until the skewer or toothpick can be inserted and comes out clean.

Note: I'm always tweaking recipes and adding extra ingredients and flavors to things. Once I had this recipe tweaked to the way I wanted it, however, I have stopped messing with it. There are few things that I'm a purist about, but this brownie recipe is one of them. No frosting, no nuts, no chocolate chips, no toffee bits, nothing.

These brownies practically beg to be eaten warm, maybe even hot. Sometimes so hot you have to use a plate and a fork. A dab of vanilla ice cream is a nice accompaniment too. They're perfect for picnics. Rarely will these brownies last through the night. They must be afraid of the dark because by morning, they are always completely gone.

Watauga Parks and Rec Summer Adventure Camp

When: 7:30 a.m. till 5:30 p.m., from Monday, June 16th until Friday, August 1st.

Where: Watauga High School

Who: Enrollment is limited to 50 campers per week. Held at , Summer Adventure Camp is open to campers ages 5 - 13, rising 1st through 7th graders (children must have completed kindergarten).

Fee: The registration fee for camp is $80 per week with some weeks having extra field trip fees assessed. To secure a camper's enrollment, one half of the total amount for camp is due at registration. Full payment of camp fees must be paid by Monday, June 9th, 2008.

Highlights: Each of the seven weeks of camp has a different and unique theme, and campers may pick and choose which weeks they wish to attend.

Watauga Parks and Rec Fun in the Sun Camp


When: 7:30 a.m. till 5:30 p.m., from Monday, June 16th until Friday, July 25th.

Where: Hardin Park School

Who: campers ages 5 - 13, rising 1st through 7th graders (children must have completed kindergarten). Kids are divided into Giggle Gang (ages 5-7), Super Troopers (ages 8-9) and Explorers (ages 10-13)

Highlights:The Fun in the Sun Camp is six weeks and the kids will swim once per week and they have physical activity and art activities on a daily basis. The campers also have access to the gym and playground.

4-H Residential Camps

4-H offers residential, week-long camps across the state at a reasonable prices. Watauga County 4-H will escort a group of campers to Betsy-Jeff Penn 4-H Center the week of July 13 for fun adventures including swimming, canoeing, climbing, archery, horseback riding and more! While our local 4-H Camping group is filling up, other opportunities are still available through the 4-H camps across the state. The difference is that the parents will need to provide their own transportation and enroll their child directly with the camp. You may contact the local 4-H office for more information and assistance at 264-3061.

We will also study both live and preserved mammal specimens, research water quality, and explore the inhabitants of Kraut Creek. Math Camp is a social happening! Similar to a sports camp, we have teams and each team has an ASU student as a coach. Summer Camps and Workshops for Kids

I began to do some research about summer camp opportunities for kids, when I came across a wonderful article on The Mountain Times Online. (See correction below) In order not to reinvent the wheel, (and avoid plagiarism charges ;-) I thought I'd just post a link to that article. Alisha Hawkins and Mike Shands did a great job finding all kind of activities in the High Country and beyond, in Boone, Blowing Rock, Appalachian State (ASU), Lees McRae in Banner Elk, Valle Crucis, even Triplett and Newland.

A New Piano Teacher in Town

Ryan Ashley is a recent graduate of the University of Oklahoma, with a Masters degree in Piano Performance and Pedagogy (teaching). Despite his impressive resume, and immense talent, he is very "down-to-earth" and approachable. He plays piano for the music ministry at Alliance Bible Fellowship in Boone, where I also attend.

Programs for Parents and Caregivers

As part of its mission to support parents, The Children’s Playhouse provides parenting classes and workshops as well as a large lending library of resource books and toys. Babysitting is provided during longer classes. All Parent programs are free to parents or caregivers.

Family support services at The Playhouse are supported in part by funding from the Children’s Council of Watauga County. Beginning in July 2008, the Children’s Council will no longer fund these services; The Children’s Playhouse is currently seeking support from the Watauga County commissioners to continue them.

“Parenting with Love and Logic” 6-8 pm, Tuesdays March 18th-April 22. Taught by Roberta Yates, this six week class teaches practical strategies for raising responsible kids who are fun to be around. Babysitting provided for up to 12 children. Free, but registration required.

Snack Attack! 10:15 Wednesday, March 19th. Learn creative, fun, and easy snack recipes that encourage kids to eat fruit and vegetables. Snacks will be peanut-free and dairy-free options will be available. A limited supply of recipe books and food bags will be given away. The program will be implemented by Nicole Lamonica, an Appalachian State University student as a community event project for her Community Nutrition class.

Learn Infant & Child CPR. 3-5 pm, Wednesday, April 23. Learn a valuable skill to protect your children. Taught by Lindsey Stovall from the Birthing Center Education office at Watauga Medical Center, this class will cover CPR for both infants and children. Class limited to eight adults. Babysitting provided but advance registration required. Free.

Breastfeeding Q&A. 10:30 Thursday, May 8th and Friday, May 9th. Bring your questions and concerns about nursing to this talk with a lactation educator.

Your Child’s Development. 10:30 Thursday, June 19th. Do you have questions about how your child is developing? If you need help, where do you turn? Delores Wilder, of Watauga County Schools and the Local Inter-agency Coordinating Council (LICC), will be available to answer questions about your child's development and the resources available to families in our community.

Easter Egg Hunt on the Slopes of Sugar Mountain

9 AM Sugar Ski Mountain and Resort

Sugar Mountain Resort will host its second Easter egg hunt on the slopes. The “golden egg” containing a 2008-2009 season pass will be scattered among hundreds of fun-filled plastic eggs spread over the lower portion of the Lower Flying Mile slope.

Participants will load the Yellow lift promptly at 9 am; unload at mid-station and meet at the Easter egg hunt start line, which will be clearly visible from the Yellow lift on Lower Flying Mile. As soon as all participants have gathered the hunt will begin. A valid slope pass and your skis or snowboard are required for participation. Participants 12 years or younger are welcome, bunnies included.

Ashe County Parks and Recreation is gearing up for a fun-filled day in the park with the Easter Bunny! The bunny himself is expected to arrive in the park around 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 22.
