2008 Summer Camps

After I posted the 2006 Summer Camp Schedule, (aren't you glad you know what camps were available 2 years ago?) I did some research about this year's summer camps! This is not yet an exhaustive list, but it will be updated as I find more opportunities

Watauga Parks and Rec Summer Adventure Camp

When: 7:30 a.m. till 5:30 p.m., from Monday, June 16th until Friday, August 1st.

Where: Watauga High School

Who: Enrollment is limited to 50 campers per week. Held at , Summer Adventure Camp is open to campers ages 5 - 13, rising 1st through 7th graders (children must have completed kindergarten).

Fee: The registration fee for camp is $80 per week with some weeks having extra field trip fees assessed. To secure a camper's enrollment, one half of the total amount for camp is due at registration. Full payment of camp fees must be paid by Monday, June 9th, 2008.

Highlights: Each of the seven weeks of camp has a different and unique theme, and campers may pick and choose which weeks they wish to attend.

Watauga Parks and Rec Fun in the Sun Camp


When: 7:30 a.m. till 5:30 p.m., from Monday, June 16th until Friday, July 25th.

Where: Hardin Park School

Who: campers ages 5 - 13, rising 1st through 7th graders (children must have completed kindergarten). Kids are divided into Giggle Gang (ages 5-7), Super Troopers (ages 8-9) and Explorers (ages 10-13)

Highlights:The Fun in the Sun Camp is six weeks and the kids will swim once per week and they have physical activity and art activities on a daily basis. The campers also have access to the gym and playground.

Fees: The registration fee for camp is $70 per week with some weeks having extra field trip fees assessed. To secure a camper's enrollment, one half of the total amount for camp is due at registration. Full payment of camp fees must be paid by Monday, June 9th, 2008.

Watauga Arts Council Summer Arts Camp, featuring the Missoula Children's Theater

When: June 23-28, 2008. The Arts Camp will operate Monday—Thursday, 9:00 am—4:00 pm
Friday, 9:00 am—show time and Saturday, noon—show time. Performances will be held Friday, June 27, at 7 p.m. & Saturday, June 28, at 3 p.m.

Where: Watauga High School Auditorium

Who: Rising first graders through rising tenth graders. 60 spaces available

Highlights: Workshops in storytelling, music, movement, improvisation, the visual arts, and more. Workshops will be led by local artists, and children will be involved in these workshops when not participating in rehearsals. The 2008 Production will be Robin Hood.

Fee: Registration fee for Summer Arts Camp: $110.00 per child
Registration fee for Robin Hood rehearsals only: $50.00 per child

Camp Broadstone's Summer Enrichment Program for Academically Gifted Youth Day Camp

When: June 16 - August 1, 2008 One-Week Sessions, Monday to Friday with campers arriving at 8:30 a.m. and returning home at 5:30 p.m.

Where:Camp Broadstone, Valle Crucis

Who: local 4th through 6th grade academically gifted youth

Highlights: The Day Camp sessions will have themes such as Exploring Science, Appalachian Heritage, Outdoor Living Skills and more!

Fee: The cost is $250 per session, and campers are welcome to register for more than one session.

Camp Broadstone's Summer Enrichment Program for Academically Gifted Youth Residence Camp (1 or 2 week sessions)

When: Two- Week Sessions, I. June 15-27, II. July 6-18, III. July 20 - August 1
One - Week Sessions, I. June 15 - 20, II. July 6 - 11, July 20 - 25

Where: Camp Broadstone, Valle Crucis

Who: Two week sessions: Current 4th - 9th Graders
One Week Sessions: Current 4th - 6th graders

Highlights: Campers attend their activities in enrichment programs each morning and participate in adventure activities in the afternoons. Seventh, eighth, and ninth grade campers will participate in a four day out-of-camp advanced program that will blend adventure activities with historical, cultural and environmental activities. This type of programming offers campers a broad range of social participation, group responsibility and individual decision making. Morning programs are hands-on activities in areas such as science, history, environmental studies, arts and crafts, journalism, music, dramatic arts, and cultural studies.

Fee: $1750 for 2-week session, $1000 for 1-week session

Blowing Rock Stage Company CAMPservatories

When: One Week Sessions, June 2 - August 1

Where: Blowing Rock Stage Company Facilities

Who: Children ages 4-18 (different age ranges each session)

Highlights: Blowing Rock Stage Company's Theatre Education & Outreach Programs (TOPs) represent the educational wing of the company. Programs are offered to all students of Watauga County and surrounding communities. Since its inception in 2001, TOPs has enjoyed the participation of over 1,250 High Country students.

Fee: Most Sessions $170 ($50 deposit due at registration)

Blowing Rock Summer Camps

When: 1 week sessions, June 9 - August 1

Where: Blowing Rock Recreation Center

Who: rising 1st graders - rising 7th graders

Highlights: Emphasizes learning to appreciate the outdoors and our environment, and that campers should be out in and a part of the environment as much as possible. We will, for the most part, plan our special on-camp events and field trips according to this theme. There will, of course, be field trips and events that are purely for fun!

Fee: Taxpayer: 1st&2nd grade $40, 3rd– 7th grade $50
Non-Taxpayer: 1st&2nd grade $95, 3rd–7th grade $110

Mountain Pathways Montessori Summer Camp

When: One Week Sessions, June 2 - August 15

Where: Mountain Pathways on Howard's Creek Rd.

Who: Children ages 4 - 10

Highlights: provides children between the ages of 4 and 10 with a wealth of experiences, activities, and projects in an environment that is safe, relaxed and nurturing, yet stimulating.

Fee: $150 per week, $25 aftercare till 5:30

Appalachian State University Youth Summer Camps

The Appalachian Youth Camps website has information about many athletic and academic camps. Sports include baseball, basketball, soccer, field hockey, football, softball, track and field, volleyball, cheerleading, wrestling.

Academics include academically gifted, craft, forensic science, math, SAT prep, scholars weekend, STARTALK institute in Chinese language skills.

Lees McRae Summer Sports Camps

As of right now, Lees McRae has only a few camps listed, but I think they should be adding more soon. They are offering Boys' Soccer and Girls' Basketball. See the Bobcat Sports Camps and Clinic page for more information.

Turtle Island Preserve Boys' and Girls' Camps

When: Young Boys Camp (Ages 7-10): June 22 -June 28, 2008
Older Boys Camp (Ages 11-17): July 6-19, 2008
Girls Camp (Ages 8-16): July 20-26, 2008

Where: Turtle Island Preserve, Triplett, NC. Eight miles from Boone.

Highlights: Turtle Island Boys and Girls Camp offers a totally unique living experience and exceptional education. All campers and instructors live in tipis or Adirondack style shelters. Living close to nature brings understanding, appreciation and love for our environment. We explore our essential needs and learn to fulfill them together.

Fee: Young Boys, $700.00 ($100.00 deposit)
Older Boys, $1400.00 ($250.00 deposit)

When: Weekend and One-week sessions from April 18 - 25

Who: Ages vary by session

4-H Residential Camps

4-H offers residential, week-long camps across the state at a reasonable prices. Watauga County 4-H will escort a group of campers to Betsy-Jeff Penn 4-H Center the week of July 13 for fun adventures including swimming, canoeing, climbing, archery, horseback riding and more! While our local 4-H Camping group is filling up, other opportunities are still available through the 4-H camps across the state. The difference is that the parents will need to provide their own transportation and enroll their child directly with the camp. You may contact the local 4-H office for more information and assistance at 264-3061.

Here are some of the possibilities:
8-14 year olds: Junior Camp- traditional 4-H camp.
Cloverbud Camp for 5-8 year olds; 2 night introduction to camp away from home
Whitewater Adventures, 13-17 year olds
Forestry Camp, 8-12 year olds
Deaf Camp, 8-16 year olds; for hearing or speech impaired youth
Adventure Camp, 13-14 year olds; backpacing, campouts, canoeing
Marine Science and Sailing camp, 12-16 year olds
Target Shooting Camp, 10-16 year olds;
Fur, Fish and Game, 12-15 year olds

ASU Summer Youth Programs and Camps

Are you looking for summer enrichment for your children or grandchildren this summer? Look no farther than the ASU Office of Conferences and Institutes! Camps are filling fast, but as of today, it is not too late to sign up for any of these creative camp programs.

1. Animal Studies: June 2-6, for rising 2nd - 5th grade students
Participants will have the opportunity to examine salamanders, lizards, snakes, and turtles. We will also study both live and preserved mammal specimens, research water quality, and explore the inhabitants of Kraut Creek. 2. Pottery classes: Wednesdays, beginning June 4, for ages 10 – 15

3. Drawing class: Thursdays, beginning June 5, for ages 10 – 15

4. Elementary Escapades: June 9-13, for ages 5 - 10
Create your own fun, build toys, make fiber arts, explore creeks, and much more. Surprise yourself in this outdoor exploration of the living world of nature. Discover hidden talents as you make olden days fiber crafts. This program starts each day on the campus of ASU, then travels on two afternoons to a nearby creek/ swamp habitat, and two afternoons to the farm home of a 5th generation Watauga County fiber artist. 5. Math Camp: July 7-10, for rising 6th-12th grade students
Math Camp is a social happening! Similar to a sports camp, we have teams and each team has an ASU student as a coach. We have hands-on activities, graphing calculators, computers, competitions, group interaction, prizes, snacks, fire-side chats (without the fire) and magic tricks that introduce algebra word problems. Also, real world problems will answer the question, "What is math good for?" Four days of music and outdoor exploration with licensed Musikgarten teacher Allison Moser.
